Parasites are active (and pesky) for most of the year. While there is no possible way to eliminate their presence completely, we can offer solutions for keeping your pet protected and keeping your home a pest-free zone.
Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes are the most common type of parasite your pet will encounter during their life. Known as “ectoparasites,” these bugs survive by hitching a ride on a passing host, latching on to their skin, and feeding on their blood. Flea, tick and mosquito bites are not generally a problem for pets, but fleas can cause allergic reactions, ticks can transmit Lyme disease, and mosquitoes can pass on heartworm disease. Therefore, we recommend that all pet owners keep their pets on some form of parasite prevention.
What We Offer
At Town & Country Animal Hospital in Fairfax, we carry a variety of preventatives to deter and treat both external and internal parasites in cats and dogs. The products we most highly recommend are Bravecto, a flea and tick preventative, and Tri-Heart Plus for preventing heartworm disease.
Bravecto comes in a tablet form for dogs, and a topical form for cats. Each dose lasts up to three months. Tri-Heart Plus is a monthly chewable tablet for dogs and puppies over six weeks of age. Once you start your pet on prevention, we recommend maintaining their routine throughout the year for maximum protection.
Your veterinarian will talk with you about the importance of parasite prevention during your pet’s first visit with us. In addition, we can offer guidance to help you get your pet back on track with their prevention program if you missed a few doses. We’re always happy to help in any way we can to keep your pet healthy. Give us a call at (703) 273-2110 if you need any assistance!
