Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese veterinary medicine and it uses certain points along meridians to help rebalance imbalances that a clinician can find doing a traditional Chinese veterinary medical exam.

How can acupuncture benefit cats?

For cats that will tolerate it and will hold still for me to do a full traditional Chinese veterinary exam and place needles along the meridians, it can definitely be a great adjunct treatment to older cats who are getting arthritic, may have certain cognitive disorders, may already be on some pain medications but need additional treatments to help getting them back to having a good quality of life.

Are there challenges with feline acupuncture?

It's a little more difficult in cats than dogs because cats tend to be what we call silent sufferers. You might just think that they're sleepy and they're slowing down over time but it actually could be an issue where they're painful or arthritic and that's why they're not jumping on the couches easily or climbing up their cat tree like they used to. And so for cats specifically, oftentimes, we need to give them a specific treatment for a specific condition and see how they respond. And if we see a benefit when we do a treatment, you know, we know they're dealing with issues that need to be addressed.

Is acupuncture suitable for all cats?

Because acupuncture involves placing needles along meridians to rebalance the body, it's not for every cat. Some cats will not hold still for the 15 to 20 minutes that I need to leave the needles in and some cats won't even let me place the needles initially. And so for this reason, we kind of need to choose our feline acupuncture patients a little more carefully than we do our dog patients and it needs to be a cat that is okay with me handling them and hanging out on a blanket while I place their acupuncture needles.
